On the popular West 4th Avenue strip in Vancouver’s Kitsilano area, the effects of the pandemic are all too evident. (FULL STORY HERE)
In the 2200 block between Yew and Vine streets, chosen as a representative section for analysis, at least 165 people have lost their jobs. Not every business responded to interview requests, so the total number of jobs lost is certainly higher.
Three-quarters of the space belongs to small businesses: restaurants, a butcher’s shop, a hardware store, hair and nail salons, massage therapy clinics. Two-thirds of them are closed or only open online — which most said provided a tiny fraction of their typical sales and nowhere near enough revenue to break even.
