New Apps and Products for your Home
There are so many cool new tools, apps and technological advances you can use in your home these days. The good news? You don’t have to be building a new home to take advantage of this new home technology, a lot of it will work just as well on your 1929-built Kitsilano Character House!
Most of this home technology uses your smartphone and an internet connection to manage and report on your home. Take a look at the following list of some cool things you can add to your home to make it a little “smarter”:
Controllable Lighting with HUE
HUE are smart lightbulbs which allow you to control all the light bulbs in your house. You can change the colour of the lights, the brightness and turn them on or off.
NEST Thermostat and Smoke & CO2 Detector
The NEST Thermostat is a really sleek, useful tool (see featured photo above). Not only can you control the temperature of your house through your smartphone, but it will learn your schedule and teach itself to optimally heat your house and hopefully save you money on your heating bills. You’ll receive monthly reports detailing your usage, and how you can save even more money. The second product from the creators of NEST is the Smoke & Co2 Detector which will slowly inform you that the smoke levels are rising with a voice, rather than an alarm.
Security Systems Connected to your Phone
There are many different systems and products out there to help you monitor your home. One of which is a Surveillance System called the Belkin Netcam, which starts recording when it detects motion, and can alert you on your phone, giving you the chance to see what’s going on in your home. With a wide angle lens, and HD technology, you’ll easily be able to see what’s happening in the room (or outside).
Automatic Door Locks
Another cool product is the Lockitron, a device that connects to your smartphone allowing you to lock, unlock and monitor your front door from wherever you are. You can set time sensitive passwords to friends, family or neighbours allowing them to enter your home at a certain time (if they have the right password), then Lockitron will automatically lock your home when the time is up.
Automatic Pet Feeder
I’m not a pet owner myself, but I have enough friends who have to be home at a certain time to feel their furry friends. This automatic pet feeder called Pintofeed can open and close through an app on your smartphone, and even has a camera so you can ensure your pet is enjoying their dinner.
Electrical Outlet Upgrades
There are a few different types of home technology that can help you out here. One of them is the thingCHARGER. This very useful tool plugs into a normal electrical outlet, allowing you to charge any of your tablets or smartphones, and ensures the outlet is still free to use.
The product comes with multiple different charging pieces, allowing you to charge Blackberry’s, iPhones, tablets, and more. There is even a USB key if you need to connect that way. thingCHARGERS we’re designed so you can plug multiple of them into one outlet allowing you to charge multiple devices at the same time.
This product will be shipping in the second half of 2014.
There are so many other products available, and many in the works (cord funding websites are usually a great place to look for the newest in interesting technology). Is there any home technology that you love to use?
